ABOUT

In Georgia, where public transportation options are limited, driver’s licenses are essential to meeting the most basic needs -- from getting to work, shopping for groceries, caring for family members, or seeking medical care. As a form of photo identification, driver’s licenses are also crucial to picking up medications, attending doctor’s appointments, opening a bank account, or renting a home. All Georgians, regardless of their immigration status, deserve driver’s licenses to get where they need to go and access the resources they need to live safely, independently, and with dignity.

Georgia’s “Freedom to Drive Act” is an important opportunity for the Georgia General Assembly to restore access to driver’s licenses for all Georgia residents. The act would allow all qualified state residents to apply for a new driver’s license called a “driver’s card.” The driver’s card will be treated the same as the state’s standard driver’s license. The only exception is that the driver’s card will not be REAL ID compliant. The “Freedom to Drive Act” is part of a growing effort by state legislatures to roll back anti-immigrant driving restrictions and ease the daily challenges faced by not only undocumented individuals but also by other impacted community members who have difficulty obtaining traditional forms of identification or residency documents.
